Spring whirlwind

Spring is a busy time for many of us. My April was filled with preparations for my girls’ school May Faire. I co-chair the event and while it is so much fun, it is so much work. My oldest is an 8th grader and they, along with the 4th graders, do a may pole dance. This has always been one of my favorite parts of our school traditions. Seeing 13 and 14 year olds dance, embracing their childhood for a little longer, is one of the magical things about a Waldorf school. No matter the class dynamic, the students always pull together and take it seriously. This year was no different but it was special to have my daughter take part. She missed her 4th grade May pole dance due to COVID. I will admit to a couple tears.

The weavings they do with the ribbons during the dance are so beautiful and symbolize how we are weaved into nature and nature into our lives. Spring is such a wonderful time to get our hands in the dirt and rejuvenate with flowers and veggies. But it is also a great time to get rejuvenated with new projects (or maybe some old ones). Pictured is a quilt top I am hoping to make into a teacher gift. I just loved the Sarah Waters line “Firefly” that came out a couple of years ago and put a fat quarter bundle to good use making 2 quilt tops. This is one.

I have been working hard on a spooky project that will be coming out this fall (get on my email list to get sneek peaks) so to take a break from that I pulled out a quilt in progress that I started when I first started to quilt in 2021. It was really the first pattern I bought that I was excited about. “Exploding Heart” by Slice of Pi Quilts. After making all the pieces (so many half and quarter square triangle blocks). I kinda fizzled. Add to that, I did not have a design wall and every time I tried to work on the floor, my cats would scatter pieces. And so into the UFO drawer it went. My oldest has been asking about it lately so I decided it was time to get it back out and hope I still liked it. Spoilers: I still LOVE it! I think I am going to try to get it done for her 8th grade graduation quilt but she doesn’t know that. She has requested a minky backing. SO stay tuned to see if I can get it done in time.
