Uncle Albert Pillow

It’s Uncle Albert block week in the Forgotten Rooms QAL and I am already enjoying seeing blocks being created. If you want to see some fun variations search for #forgottenroomsqal on Facebook or Instagram.

By the time this block was released, I had made 4 Uncle Albert blocks, 2 for quilts and 2 extra. I decided to turn those extra blocks into something I could use. Today I want to share a simple envelope pillow case pattern you can also use for a spare block. I love envelope pillow cases because they are easy to make, easy to store, easy to change and just takes a little extra fabric to make.

My unfinished block is 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” and my pillow form was 16”. You can adjust the pattern as needed.

I cut (2) 2 1/2'“ x 12 1/2” side border strips

and (2) 2 1/2” x 16 1/2” top and bottom strips

For an envelope back, cut (2) 12” x 16 1/2” pieces

On the back 2 pieces, fold over a long edge ~1/2” x 2 times and press. Sew at a quarter inch to finish edge. Repeat on second back piece.

Next make the front of your pillow.

Sew the shorter border pieces to each side.

Then sew the longer pieces to the top and bottom. It should measure ~16 1/4” square.

Place one backing piece right sides together with pillow front. Line unfinished long edge with top of pillow front.

Place the other backing piece, lining the unfinished long edge with the bottom of the pillow front.

Sew along around all 4 sides, back stitching where the back pieces overlap.

Turn right side out and insert pillow form.

Uncle Albert pillow has found a home.

I love how the pillow turned out and that this block is perfect for use all year round. Or at least until I make another pillow case. Happy Sewing!
